Description
LANVIN Paris INTERCHANGEABLE Pendant NECKLACE-IOB-Keira This is IT!  The vintage 1970s signed LANVIN Necklace with INTERCHANGEABLE PLASTIC PENDANTS in the ORIGINAL BOX.  The one Keira Knightley so famously wore.  Not one of the look-alikes, this is the Lanvin original. Signed Lanvin jewelry from the 1970s with enamel or plastic, like this necklace set, is really sought after by collectors these days - and no wonder!  Their current designs, like the faux pearls wrapped in tulle, have made recent fashion news and sell well both in the secondary market and in department stores, where they are readily available.  However, the supply of vintage pieces like this is quite limited.  And the Lanvin interchangeable pendant necklace in the original box is the "Holy Grail" for collectors, but there just aren't enough of them to go around.  Jewelry designers who were also clothing designers often made the most interesting costume jewelry: both stylish and collectible.  The interchangeable pendant necklace clearly shows the fashion sense of the House of Lanvin was as innovative in the 1970s as now.  It has a strong Art Deco-inspired design that is absolutely sensational.  Jewelry that makes a statement is "in" again and this necklace says it all! Talk about a versatile piece of jewelry.... Three necklaces in one!  And the COLORS!  Simply stunning.  The thick plastic is marbleized for interest and depth and achieves a richness and complexity that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.  (The chocolate one, streaked with black, is so amazing, it might well make brown your new favorite color!) The box measures 8" by 5" by a little over 1" deep.  The slinky snake chain necklace measures about 18-1/4", extended and terminates in a spring ring clasp.  Each pendant measures about 2-5/8" tall and tapers from about 1-1/2" wide at the top to just over 2" at the bottom by about 1/2" deep at the thickest and with the bail, gives the necklace's drop an overall length of 3-5/8". The Lanvin logo appears on the top of the box and the satiny material inside the top reads "Bijoux Lanvin New York - Paris."  Each pendant, as well as the back of the bail, is signed on the back "Lanvin Paris" with a "c" in a circle. There are small inconsistencies in the pieces, dating from when they were finished by hand during manufacture.  The pendants differ slightly in size and shape.  The two bars from which they hang do not line up perfectly and the depth of the grooves in the plastic that accommodates the bars varies.  These small discrepancies result in the pendants' hanging slightly differently and the green one lays a little crooked.  The red and brown ones might not hang perfectly straight but any crookedness is not very noticeable and it would not have occurred to me were it not for the green one.  I do not know if this is a common issue with these sets, but noting that on the rare occasions they come on the market, they are fetching well over $2000, in view of these anomalies, I have started this one at $999.99 and NO Reserve.  (In fact, the necklace part alone, with some wear and no pendants or box, sold October 7 on eBay for $295, so at my price, the sum of the parts could be worth considerably more than the whole.  You can't go wrong here!  Except of course, by not bidding right away, before someone makes me an offer I can't refuse to add a BIN price for them.) The red paper-covered box makes a fine presentation with just a little age-appropriate wear: there are some small scuffs on the back and corners, the white Lanvin logo on the top is slightly eroded (see last photo) and there is a little dirt/staining on the inside, which I have not attempted to clean, mostly on the fitted insert.  The necklace and pendants evidence expected surface dirt and scratches and there are a few very slightly rough spots on the bottom edge of the red pendant, none of which is visible except upon extremely close inspection.  The only signs of wear of note are to the gold metal finish on the backs of the green and red pendants and on the snake chain and bail, where it has mellowed somewhat over the years but looks just fine. The Lanvin interchangeable pendant necklace in the original box is what vintage jewelry collecting is all about.  This is an exceptional set: collectible not just because it is an outstanding example of Seventies design by a highly respected firm that is the darling of fashionistas, known for its style and the quality of its designs, but also because it is wonderfully wearable.  The versatile colors will go with everything year round.  Not too flashy to wear during the day, to work or play; it takes on a glamorous look at night.  And whatever you wear it with, it will make you feel as elegant and sophisticated as it looks.  It may even make you feel like a Movie Star!  The Best of the Best.  Sets like this do not come along every day - not even on eBay!  An Exquisite Lanvin boxed necklace set that will make an Important addition to any collection.  Get the Holiday Season off to a good start by buying yourself a Christmas present now!  But watch out for sniping Santas!
